Title: Exploring reproductive decision-making for individuals with conditions affecting appearance. The role of stigma in decision-making.

Speakers: Dr Kerry Montgomery, University of the West of England.

Abstract:

For individuals with inheritable conditions that affect appearance, such as craniofacial conditions, neurofibromatosis, ichthyosis, and Epidermolysis Bullosa, reproductive decision-making can be uniquely challenging. These decisions are shaped by a range of factors, including experiences of social stigma, concerns about passing on the condition, family dynamics, identity, and interactions with healthcare professionals.

This talk explores how individuals make choices about having children, including the use of reproductive technologies and the decision not to have children. Drawing on qualitative research, it highlights the emotional, social, and ethical dimensions of these decisions and the profound influence of societal perceptions and stigma.

The presentation also identifies key gaps in current support for individuals with conditions affecting appearance and outlines ongoing efforts to develop tailored resources for individuals and the professionals guiding them. By understanding these complex experiences, we can move toward more compassionate, informed, and inclusive care

Location: St Mary’s Hospital, 6th Floor.
