Biog:
Associate Professor Fred Chen is a retinal specialist with research interest in inherited retinal diseases, macular degeneration and autoimmune retinopathy.
He is the Director of Research for the Lions Eye Institute (Perth, Australia) and a Co-Editor-in-Chief forClinical and Experimental Ophthalmology. He and his team has made significant and ongoing contribution to the understanding of inherited retinal diseases, natural history of disease progression, genotype-phenotype correlations, structure-function associations and multimodality retinal imaging.
Published in over 300 research papers and reviews, he has several national and international collaborations in inherited retinal diseases research programmes. He is internationally recognised for the co-invention ofVP-001 for the treatment of PRPF31-related retinitis pigmentosa. He has trained over 30 fellows in medical and surgical retina and supervised 10 PhD students to completion. He works in Perth and Melbourne in their tertiary public adult and paediatric hospitals.
