Speaker: Dr Antony Adamson, Expert Technical Specialist and Manager at The Genome Editing Unit (University of Manchester)

Title: Functional Characterisation and Validation of Disease-Associated Variants

Abstract: Dr Antony Adamson is an expert in genetic manipulation strategies with extensive experience in the development of genetically modified (GM) models for research. After a postdoctoral career focused on creating GM cell and mouse models for single-cell microscopy, he joined the Manchester Transgenic Unit in 2015 to bring in-house expertise in genetic modification to support and enhance mouse model production. In 2018, Antony was appointed Manager, and drove the rebranding of the facility as the Genome Editing Unit (GEU), reflecting a broadened scope and a sharper focus on cutting-edge genetic engineering technologies, with a particular focus on CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing.

Under Antony’s guidance, the Unit expanded its services beyond mouse model generation to include genetically modified cancer cell lines, fruit flies, and, more recently, pluripotent stem cell (PSC) models. This diversification has allowed the facility to remain at the forefront of innovation while meeting the evolving needs of the research community. The facility works with research groups across a wide range of interests, from basic and life science research, to pre-clinical, diagnostic and translationally focused groups, especially in rare disease.
